The Story Behind the Recipe
Some recipes become special because they’re difficult to make.
Others become special because they were reserved for special occasions.
Brownie Drop Cookies were one of those treats.
Unlike many of the other cookies Mom baked throughout the Christmas season, these called for Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate—a luxury compared to ordinary chocolate chips. Because the chocolate cost more, these cookies weren’t made in quite the same abundance as the others.
That only made them more special.
Whenever they appeared on the Christmas cookie trays, everyone knew they wouldn’t last long. Their rich chocolate flavor and soft, brownie-like texture made them one of the first treats to disappear.
Years later, I began making them myself and couldn’t resist adding my own little twist. A handful of semi-sweet or mint chocolate chips folded into the batter gave the cookies another layer of texture and flavor while still honoring Mom’s original recipe.
Even now, every batch reminds me that some traditions aren’t meant to stay exactly the same.
They’re meant to be lovingly continued.
Mom’s Original Recipe

The original recipe clipping, complete with Mom’s handwritten notes and adjustments.
Ingredients
2 packages (1 ounce each) Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate
1 tablespoon butter
2 eggs
¾ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
¾ cup chopped walnuts (optional, as Mom noted)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Melt the German’s Sweet Chocolate and butter together over a pan of hot water (or in a double boiler). Stir until smooth and allow to cool slightly.
In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs until foamy.
Gradually add the sugar, about 2 tablespoons at a time, beating well after each addition until the mixture is thickened and glossy (about 5 minutes with an electric mixer).
Stir in the melted chocolate mixture.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
Fold the dry ingredients into the chocolate mixture.
Stir in the vanilla and chopped walnuts, if using.
Drop the batter by teaspoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet.
Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the cookies feel set when lightly touched.
💛 Mom’s Notes
Various times Mom would try these with a different chocolate; however, she always returned to the German’s Sweet Chocolate. She always thought that certain ingredients had a reputation for consistent quality and that’s what you used, you didn’t skimp.
From Gregory’s Kitchen
Brownie Drop Cookies always felt like Christmas’s “special occasion” cookie. Because Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate cost more than chocolate chips, Mom didn’t make as many of them, and that only made them more memorable. Today, I still bake them from her recipe, usually adding a handful of semi-sweet or mint chocolate chips to the batter. It’s a small change, but every bite reminds me that family traditions can grow while still honoring where they began.
Some of the sweetest things we inherit aren’t recipes… they’re the memories we made while preparing them together.
Thank you, Mom, for filling our home with traditions that continue to bring joy, one recipe and one memory at a time
